"Can I buy you a drink?"
Startled, Farrah turned with a jump. She'd completely forgotten that she wasn't the only person at the bar on this dark and dreary evening.
"I've already got one."
She turned away from the notebook she'd been scribbling in to inspect him. He was... well, he was anybody, really. A man of average height, average looks, with everyday blond hair an average smile.
"I know" he persisted, "but it seemed like less of a line than asking if you come here often."
"Great. There's nothing a woman likes more than being fed a cheesy pickup line."
"OK, then how about this? A guy walks into a bar and sees an attractive woman sitting alone. She isn't wearing a wedding ring and looks like somebody who'd be fun to talk to. And since it's pouring down rain outside, the guy assumes she's not leaving anytime soon. Am I close?"
"So, you saw that I don't have a wedding ring but missed that I've got a drink right in front of me?"
She batted her eyelashes at this stranger, waiting to see if he'd give up after a snarky comment, or if he'd give it another shot.
"OK then, one last try..."
"...only one? You disappoint me. Better make it a good one then."
"OK. A guy walks into a bar..."
"Women prefer men, just so you know."
"A man walks into a bar."
"He just walks in? Where's your sense of storytelling man? Put your heart into it."
"A man walks out of a drug store with a newspaper just as a speeding car drives by. The car splashes through a puddle, leaving the guy soaked."
"...the man, you mean."
"Right. The man. He sees what looks like a neighborhood pub, and he thinks he'll see if he can wait out the rain in there."
"Get to the part about the woman!" Farrah demanded. To say that her curiosity had been piqued would be putting it mildly.
"OK, so, this man..." he continued. "He enters the bar hoping for a warm place and a stiff drink."
"A second ago it was a pub, but now it's a bar?"
"And as he looks around the pub hoping to find a bartender..."
"...a pub-tender, you mean?" Farrah interrupted with a giggle.
"So, the cold, wet man wants to order a stiff drink, but then he sees a beautiful woman, sitting alone at the bar."
"Ooh, I like this part of the story. Does the beautiful woman make the man stiff? Or does he still need the drink?" Farrah was staring into his eyes to see what he'd do next. "C'mon... don't leave me hanging here. What happens next?"
"What happens next is the man introduces himself to the beautiful woman, and she finds him irresistible."
"Well get to it then. Introduce yourself, mister irresistible."
"I'm Steve."
