63 million people voted for Hillary Clinton in this past election.
60 million voted for Rump.
It's too easy to blame the electoral college for the fact that the winner of the popular vote didn't become the president. Why didn't the winner win? We all know why. It's about electing electors in individual states. Two of the past three presidents, Rump and Dubya, were elected with a minority of the popular vote - but an even greater minority didn't vote at all. Let's look at the numbers for November 2016 again.
63 million people voted for Clinton.
60 million voted for Rump.
Rump lost the popular vote by 3 million votes, but that's only three percent of the number of Americans of legal age who didn't bother to vote at all.
As of the most recent census, 223 million people in the U.S. are old enough to vote. A candidate getting only 60 million votes should have lost by at least fifty million votes.
223 million people in the U.S. are old enough to vote.
60 million votes was enough to win. Come on now. Do the math.
Nearly a hundred million of our fellow citizens are so mother fucking lazy they couldn't get their worthless asses off the couch for long enough to do something as simple as vote.
I know, I know... here come the excuses. Boo hoo this and boo hoo that. Shut. The. Fuck. Up.
When I was in high school, I spent a year as an exchange student living in Bolivia during a presidential election cycle.
Bolivians lined up in the blazing hot summer sun for hours to cast their ballots.
There was such a sense of pride. The line was so long that I don't even know where they were all lined up to go. As a foreigner, I had no business taking part, so I went home. I don't remember what voter participation was in that election oh so many years ago, but in their most recent election, voter turnout was 92%.
NINETY TWO PERCENT.
Voter turnout in the U.S. in this election was 53%. We pompously claim our president to be the leader of the free world, yet even as we boast about that responsibility, 47% of Americans old enough to vote were too fucking lazy to give even half a damn.
We are pathetic.
I'll say it again. We are pathetic, and we will continue to be pathetic until we prove otherwise.
If you think saying these things makes me unpatriotic, you couldn't be more wrong. I love my country but I am embarrassed by its leaders and I am even more embarrassed by my fellow citizens.
If you're not embarrassed, you're not paying attention. Please do.
The only way out of the disaster our nation has fallen into is for all of us to do our part.
If you're not registered to vote, don't wait. Put it in your calendar and do it this coming week. Americans are in a furor over what Trump and the Republicans are doing, but I don't see more Americans registering to vote. Complaining won't get the job done.
Register to vote. Put it in your calendar now. Do it on Monday. No excuses. If you can't do it Monday, do it on Tuesday. NO EXCUSES.
Do you know your elected officials email addresses and phone numbers? Holy cow, do you even know who they are? Find out. Make your voice heard. It's a frigging phone call. NO EXCUSES.
If there's a protest march being held in your town, do your part. Get out there and make your voice heard. This is your future. It's worth a few hours every now and then. Hell, it's worth a few hours a day but I'm only asking for a few hours a month. If you care, there are NO EXCUSES.
I can't believe I have to beg people to care.
Don't just bitch. Get involved.
