When I was a boy

They told me that someday
I'd grow to be something
because I was someone

but everything I heard
and everything I saw
and everything I was foolish enough to believe

became everything I knew
I never wanted to be
and now I am not

In becoming not
I have become more
though there is still so much more

for me to be

Because I knew I didn't want to
Because I then chose not to

I chose because I can
I chose because I am
