    Radio Nowhere
    09/24/07 - 09/30/07

  1. You're a Wolf | Sea Wolf
  2. Brainy | The National
  3. Boy With A Coin | Iron & Wine
  4. Fuck Was I | Jenny Owen Youngs
  5. Silver Lining | Rilo Kiley
  6. Ice Monster | Minus The Bear
  7. If That's The Case, Then I Don't Know | The Electric Soft Parade
  8. War Pigs | Cake
  9. Relative Surplus Value | The Weakerthans
  10. Radio Nowhere | Bruce Springsteen
  11. Time Bomb | Beck

Is it me, or are we in a rut, musically? I'm not saying there isn't a lot of great music coming out lately, because clearly there is. Just look at that playlist. But so much of the music today is a throwback to previous decades. Tell me you don't hear any Sabbath in that Cake song... Tell me that Springsteen song couldn't have been recorded by Old 97's in the 90s, or The Replacements in the 80s? Or by Springsteen himself, in the 70s?

Speaking of which... I find myself shocked to be posting a Bruce Springsteen song, but I have to admit... wow. On first listen, I just stared at the speakers in disbelief as Radio Nowhere played. Simply put, it's kickass roots rock.

The current retro rehash is a lot of fun, but it makes me wonder what's coming next. This decade is overdue for an overhaul. In the meantime, we've got a time bomb, we've got a time bomb, we've got a time bomb...

...na, nah nah, na.

No, no rut. I truly believe we are heading into the next thing...rocking out with crazy/old skool instruments: banjos digeridoos, harmonicas, garbage can lids, whatever we can find! Bluegrass is on the rise. So are long drum solos. Check out Avett Brothers, Toubab Krewe, Xavier Rudd, John Butler Trio. It's all catching on, and it's going to be BIG. (I think)

See, Rob? SEE? Avett Brothers, I'm telling you, they rock.

Hey Kim, if you're reading this, thanks for the tips! I've been into the Avetts for a couple of months, since I heard them a local roots music festival, and five minutes with I-Tunes says I might like some of these others you mentioned too.
