Listen to me. Do not rename your hard drive, especially for use with iTunes. Hopefully that portal you opened did not release any new evil into the world.

Here's a short version of the story regarding what I did.

Since I work out of home as a freelancer, and since much of my work involves producing audio, I deal with a lot of audio files. Songs, samples, voicework, sound effects, etc etc etc. A lot of this audio is irreplaceable! And, considering how large my iTunes library has become, that's pretty hard to replace as well.

I have multiple hard drives, and I back them all up. Often.

I have my Mac set up to automatically back everything up 3 times a week. It does this in the middle of the night, and the process is so seamless that I forget all about it - until there is a problem.

I decided to rename all of the hard drives in order to make it easier to figure out what files are where in the event that I need to find a specific file on a rarely accessed backup drive.

In the process of renaming seven drives and partitions so the names made more sense, I forgot to tell iTunes the new name of the drive with my music. iTunes found the backup instead of the original, and I didn't catch that mistake until I tried playing a song I'd added within the last 24 hours. The file it found didn't match what it expected to find, so it must have assumed I'd updated it. And it renamed it. After watching iTunes rename about 20 sounds as I clicked around, I figured out what was happening and why...

...however...

While trying to fix the error, I somehow made it worse. All of my songs were being scattered across multiple hard drives.

In the end, I didn't lose anything, but I had to have iTunes move all 11,000+ songs to a new location, then I cleared my original iTunes drive, and had iTunes move all of my songs back to the original location on the renamed hard drive.

Having iTunes move 11,000+ songs twice takes a lot of time!

Ack ack ack!

100% my fault.
