You Bought It Why?

I was at Target a while ago with my friend Erica (Potter's mom), when she said "God, I'm such a sucker for great packaging."

I enjoy that sort of honesty. I mean, let's face it: if packaging weren't an effective way to get people to buy things, there'd be a hell of a lot less of it.

Still, I'd like to believe that I don't fall victim to marketing ploys, especially since marketing is more or less what I do for a living...

...but this week, I bought a bottle of wine...

...a bottle with a screw-top...

...that wasn't even cheap...

...and did I mention the fucking screw top!!!!?

Yes, I bought a bottle of non-cheap screw-top wine because the screw-top looked like this:

screw top

Note that I did not serve this wine to anyone. I drank it myself.

HHhmmm... that somehow makes it sound even worse.

Screwtops are the way of the future, man! We've actually had some pretty good wines that were screwtops... OK, I didn't drink any of it, but Doug said they were good :) Apparently there are all kinds of good reasons why screwtops are not as bad as people think...

They just look cheap -- which brings us back to the whole packaging thing :)

Me? I'm a sucker to great packaging, too... I think it's a cultural thing for me, though *grin*

Someone else who pops by my blog from time to time speaks highly of cask wine.

Any idea what cask wine is? It's wine in a box.

I'm not questioning her judgment, mind you. Not at all. I bet there's some "cask wine" that's delicious, and I understand that it keeps longer that way.

But, y'know what? I'm single, and there's something to be said for uncorking a bottle of wine during a date.

Wine-in-a-box is supposed to be making the jump from "cheap" to "respectable", but a lot of people aren't buying it... An advantage is that the wine doesn't get oxygenated if you don't drink all of it all at once, but we've found that one of the vaccuum-sucker things works pretty well to help preserve the wine...

And yes, uncorking a bottle of wine over a cozy dinner with candles and cloth napkins is a divine thing... Save the Box-o-Wine for another time :)

I like some wine with a screw top. It no longer is an indicator of cheap wine. And when your corkscrew is on a bender it's easier to open.

Also I'm single too and there is nothing better than popping the cork on a bottle of wine all for yourself.
