The Secret: E.H.A.B.R.
I'm taking care of a friend's cat and plants this week. She left a detailed list for the plants, which is good because I'm pretty clueless in that area (sorry Duncan, sorry Burton). For her cat, Potter, she covered the basics: give him this much food, check his water, change the litter on Wednesday. That sort of thing.
The last item in the instructions for Potter said:
"Extra hugs and belly rubs."

And that's when I realized the true value of what I was holding. On the tiny slip of paper in my very hand was written the secret to living a happy life. Extra Hugs And Belly Rubs. (E.H.A.B.R.!!!)
Knowing this presents three problems for a single man:
#1 - it's hard to hug yourself, and rubbing your own belly lacks that certain something, if you know what I mean (and I know you do).
#2 - time. Let's face it, you're not likely to get extra hugs on a first date. Hugs? Sure... but "extra hugs"? Not likely. And belly rubs are out of the question.
#3 - and this one is key: her cat isn't going to let just anyone rub its belly, and neither am I, and neither are you. First, I had to win the cat over. Earn its trust, build a bond. That sort of thing. Now that her cat realizes I'm a good guy (not to mention a damn fine belly rubber), good times are had.
If only women were as easy to win over as cats.

Then again, last night when I rubbed Potter's belly, he sent a claw through my top of my hand when he was done with the rubbing and ready for some playing.
I'm more the sensitive type really... I mean, I'm all for belly rubbing leading to further caressing, but I don't like it rough.

...and just to clarify, further caressing for Potter involves the scratching of his ears and petting of his back.

I've found the same to be true. Although I'm pretty good at rubbing my own belly in emergencies. :)
I wish my cat weren't such a jerk!

What an adorable cat! We have a local stray who does the same thing--plays the coquette and then attacks one's hand when the invitation to rub her belly is accepted. Hang in there, Rob . . . if Gary and I managed to find each other, surely there is a wonderful belly-rubber out there for you, too.

Potter's pretty cool as far as cats go, and that's coming from a cat-guy. He's tough to get great photos of though because he'll be too busy playing and inspecting the camera. Ahh well.
