It's How The Hustle Goes, See What The Juke Box Knows

Music Monday for the week of 05/01-05/07... another week of Jalpuna Radio. Ten seconds into the first song, you'll know where this week's picks are headed.

I was going to call this week's playlist "Nerds". Remember those? The little pop-rocks candies from the 1980's? Yeah, well, I wasn't sure anybody would get it but me... so I passed (and yet I mention it now)

As usual, I'll note that the playlist gets updated each Monday (so long as my bandwidth can support it)

Anyway...

  1. The Format - The First Single (you know me)

God do I love a good piece of power-pop. I wrote about finding the first song on this week's mix here.

  2. Wheat - Don't I Hold You. "Don't I love you like you want to be loved? You're running away." Such a poppy little number, but sad nonetheless.

  3. Fountains Of Wayne - Mexican Wine. I'll be yours if you'll be mine. Grin.

  4. Jack's Mannequin - The Mixed Tape. This is the solo project of a guy named Andrew MacMahon. He's the lead singer/songwriter behind the band Something Corporate, and he's someone whose music I'll be excited to keep on buying.

Honestly, if you like this song, the whole "Everything In Transit" CD is this good.

  5. Relient K - When I Go Down.

    when I go down
it hurts to hit the bottom
and of the things that got me there
I think, if only I had fought them

I didn't realize this was a Christian band. I guess that when I hear a new piece of music, I tend to read my own thoughts and moods into the lyrics. I honestly thought he was singing about a woman. It makes me sad to realize he isn't - but that'd be a topic for another day.

  6. Jump, Little Children - Mexico. Love it. (this one's for Duncan - yesterday's post will explain why. Grin. Actually, it probably won't since yesterday's post made very little sense!)

    I won't let you go
    I won't let you go
    Not to Detroit City
    Not to Chicago.

And I won't let you go
    I won't let you go
    Not to Mississippi
    Not to Tupelo.

    But if you're gonna leave
    I'm asking you to please
    Go all the way
    To Mexico.

All the way to the shore of California Bay
    And I'll be fine
'Cause I have taken you back
    for the last time.

  7. Nada Surf - Concrete Bed. "To find someone you love, you've gotta be someone you love." I bought this album as soon as I heard the first hook, and I wasn't disappointed.

  8. Lowest Of The Low - Save Me, Alice Neel! These guys are a Canadian band that never made it here in the states. Tragic!

  9. Jimmy Eat World - Authority Song. It's from the "Bleed American" CD, which was immediately renamed "Jimmy Eat World" after 9/11. I borrowed the first line of the song for the title of this post and playlist.

  10. Sugarbomb - What A Drag. They're a local Dallas band that, to the best of my knowledge, never made it beyond their hometown. What a drag

Loved the line up and I've never even heard of most of these bands (how sad is that?). Much better afternoon pick me up than that third diet soda I was thinking of buying.

(I remember Nerds candy too!)

I think I really like Fountains of Wayne. Hmmm, but Mexico is really good too. And of course Authority Song is great. When I saw the title of your post, I knew that I knew that lyric but couldn't place it until I got to that song! I still love to listen to the CD with that on it. Thank you. :)
