Hear My Engine Whine

Ahh, Monday... Music Monday around here. For this week's Jalpuna Radio, it's "Twangpuna!"

I'm not a fan of country music - but a bit of twang in alternative roots rock suits me just fine from time to time.

Here's a little of that...

    "Twangpuna!" | 05/22/06 - 05/28/06

  1. Dirty Diesel | Paul Westerberg
  2. Moment in the Sun | Clem Snide
  3. Joining the Army | Lucero
  4. Drown | SunVolt
  5. I'm The Man Who Loves You | Wilco
  6. Murder (or a Heart Attack) | Old 97's
  7. On Your Side | Pete Yorn
  8. Spoke Too Soon | Cory Branan
  9. Long Black Train | House Of Freaks
  10. Twin Rocks, Oregon | Shawn Mullins

If nothing else, you need to pay attention to the lyrics of the Old 97's song... they're priceless! Who writes a song about a cat sneaking out? ...or was it a dog? ...or was it his girlfriend? OK, ok, it's safe to assume that last guess is wrong - but it makes me giggle all the same.

And the hole
In the screen is barely big enough for you
and not near enough for me to go

And the whole damn complicated
situation could've been
avoided if I'd only shut the window

And I may be leavin' myself open
to a murder or a heart attack
But I'm leavin' the back door open
'til you come back

And I may be movin' myself closer
to a real untimely end
But I'm leavin' the back door open
'til you come home again

And I told
the neighbors, I put pictures up
and handed out some flyers at the show

And the whole town's speculating
situation could've been
avoided if I'd only shut the window

Oh, if he'd only shut the window!

One more note about this week's playlist: House Of Freaks was an amazing two-man band in the late 80s and early 90s. For some reason, I wouldn't feel right referring to them as a duo. Their music is definitely worth seeking out, though I believe much of it is out of print. Their lead singer/guitar player/main songwriter was a man named Bryan Harvey. I've written about him here. Be warned - it's sad.
