The New Loft - After

Let's go on a walking tour of the new loft. It is, of course, a work in progress... but it's home and I love it.

...beginning at the entry, walking through the front door.

welcome

The first thing you probably notice is the floor to ceiling windows. One whole side of the loft is glass, which gets dark at night and bright during the day. It's amazing how much the character of this place changes from day to night.

On to the living room...

The fireplace is gas, and it serves as the heater for the loft. It's set on a thermostat, meaning it kicks itself on and off to keep the place toasty warm. And note the coffee table and the CD-cat on top of the fireplace. They're from a local artisan metalworks shop called Delia.

Delia CD cat

The wine rack off to the left (below) is from Delia too. And this is my kitchen.

Windows, windows, windows... and a breakfast bar more or less built into them.

kitchen 3

Can you tell that half of the wine bottles are empty? Really, it's a piece of art, and it's as much for recycling as it is for wine storage.

Standing in the kitchen now, facing the rest of the loft... on to the dining room.

the loft

The huge glass panel on the left (below) is actually a sliding glass door to nowhere. They call this sort of thing a "pocket balcony." There's a decorative metal plate on the outside of the door that serves as a railing, but it's hard to see that in this pic.

table

Here's a better shot of what you see towards the bottom of the pic above. This is the view from my dining room table, looking down at the Safeway across the street.

Safeway

Turning left, to my work-area.

my desk, office, etc

This is my office/studio/etc. Most people hear the word studio and think of a studio apartment, but after my years in radio, I use the word to refer to my recording gear and such - normally called an editing suite of home-studio.

studio

OK, turning around now and going back into the living room to face my bed...

bed

I think my bed is one of the most ingenious uses of space for loft-life. By buying a canopy bed and hanging curtains from it, I get privacy at night without having to close ten sets of blinds. Also, it serves as a wall dividing up several rooms worth of open space. And I just happen to think it looks cool.

bed

The bed is raised to create storage underneath, and the picture below shows why raising it was essential.

closet

The closet above is the only storage space in this loft. Yikes! Luckily, it's on wheels, so I've placed it diagonally away from the wall to create storage space behind it with simple shelving cubes.

storage

And that takes us back to where we started - in the entry way.

entry

If there's a way to take a picture of a bathroom, I sure don't know it... but you get the idea.

bathroom

So there you have it - my new loft. It's definitely turning into a place that feels like home.

LOVE your bed! Curtains make it rich in texture and color, and so regal.
Cat/CD holder and wine rack are also great.

Great space. I think we should have magazines for small spaces -- instead of the current decorating magazine that emphasize huge, impersonal spaces. Yes, you should enter the contest.
