Katrina Provides Food For Thought

I can't even begin to understand the unimaginable tragedy along the path of Hurricane Katrina. I can't pretend to know what it's like to wade through chest-deep water in search of a meal. I've lived through a hurricane, but nothing like this.

I can't even fathom what people in places like New Orleans and Biloxi are going through. What I certainly can understand is how tragedy brings out the best and the worst in people.

Sadly, I'm going to point out a piece of the worst.

The following two photos and blurbs are taken from Yahoo News, at http://news.yahoo.com. One photo is of a black person, the other is of two white people. They're doing the exact same thing, though they are presented quite differently.

Judge for yourself.

Here's photo number one:

Here's photo number two:

Not Looters?

Gee, the first photo is of 'looting' while the second is of 'finding'?

That. Ain't. Right.

While people question the link between theft and skin color, I'm waiting for people to also question the link between the lack of security on American soil and the plethora of American troops in the middle east.

We sure could use those 150,000 troops to secure Louisiana and Mississippi.

Hmmm...I commented briefly on the very same thing today as well. Glad to see that others are equally outraged...

Not even a subtle difference in the captions. Here we are patting our backs, thinking we are a racially respectful nation, but it simply is not far enough. Another 'Mission Accomplished?'
