How is it that intelligent men and women become stupid the moment politics are brought into the equation?
It's been fascinating to watch the Republican - err "conservative" - spin on Michael Moore's documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11. Anyone who believes there isn't a shred of truth to the film has not seen it.
You may agree with the presentation of the facts. You may disagree with the presentation of the facts. But that makes the facts themselves no less true.
FACT: Osama Bin Laden was head of the terrorist group that caused such terrible devastation here in the U.S. on September 11th.
FACT: He had family members in the United States on September 11th, and we flew them out without questioning and investigation. That's a fact not up for debate as both parties have confirmed it to be so.
FACT: We don't know where Osama Bin Laden is, but when one of his family members got married, they knew how to find him and he attended the ceremony. Again, there is confirmation of this, so it's up for debate.
Odd that the our government chose not to question and investigate his family even though they were in this country and we knew their whereabouts on the days after 9/11. At the very least, that has to make one go "hhhmmmmmm..."
I feel sorry for anyone who values POLITICS over the security of their homeland. I know many Republicans who are just as upset as Democrats and Independents over the plane loads of Saudis and Bin Ladens leaving the U.S. in the days after 9/11 while American Citizens were still grounded.
Zealots harm that which they love the most because they defend it without exception - questioning nothing along the way. I have little respect for people like that. Using party politics as an example, a wise man may agree with his party's ideology and values but DISAGREE when his party or those whom represent it make mistakes. Speaking out against those mistakes would only make the party STRONGER, not weaker.
The same is true of patriotism. A true patriot is not one who serves as a human bobblehead - a yes man for all occasions. A true patriot is one who speaks out when his country is in the wrong. If you think our country is never in the wrong, you are truly a mental midget. By speaking out when your country is wrong, you do your part to make your country a better place - a stronger nation. Men and women have fought and died to protect this country. I find it pathetic when someone suggests we all agree for the sake of agreement because it would be best for their political party.
It is pathetic - and 100% un-American. In fact, such zealotry is more traitorous than patriotic.
Very well said, Rob. Very well said indeed.
Carla, my co-blogger and best friend, and I saw the movie last night in Tanasbourne. I'm a long-time Independent with no particular love for the Democratic party. So, maybe that colored my perceptions a bit. But, I left the movie very angry. Angry at the callous indifference by those in power - both Dems and GOPers who make selfish decisions based on politics.
For the most part it is the NeoCon Republicans running Bush Inc that are implicated in the movie... and rightly so. But, I was deeply disturbed by the segment where members of the Congressional Black Caucus tried in vain to get one of the white Democratic Senators to sign the request to investigate how so many eligible voters had been prevented from voting in Florida.::::: | July 2, 2004 9:31 PM
I know precisely what part of the movie you are referring to - and I was absolutely stunned and saddened by it as well. And angered.::::: | July 3, 2004 12:04 AM
