Come On Beautiful
An acoustic guitar plays softly and gently...
Drums. aaRrrratta ta ta... rrratta TA ta... arrratta Ta ta...
A man sings:
"nothing ever seems to make you happy
are you miserable babe?
or are you just plain mean?
Is there no joy in you?
Well come on, don't keep me waiting
your broken heart might bring you headlong to heaven
but it will not bring you another morning with Kathleen"
And suddenly, I remember everything I loved about the band American Music Club. Mark Eitzel writes terribly sad songs about love and about loss... about pain and emotions we all go through in our own ways. AMC recorded a series of wonderful albums in the late 80's & early 90's before Eitzel went his own way into a moderately dull solo career... and then ten years later, the band is back & we have a new song! I already can't wait to buy the whole CD when it's released. It'll surely be miserable bliss!!! After all, Eitzel is the man who gave us thoughts such as "Gary can you tell me why the leaves on the trees are falling this year as early as the spring", not to mention one of my all time favorite song titles: "What Godzilla Said To God When His Name Wasn't Found In The Book Of Life."
I know so many of the old songs by heart...
"well I've been praying a lot lately. It's because I no longer have a TV... just a florescent hangover to light the way between the things you say and the things I see." (from "Apology For An Accident")
"if you ask the man in the tollbooth, I'm sure he'd tell you
that on the highways there's a million ways if you want to disappear
should you take a left or a right? Well I'm sure I don't care.
All I want out of life is to hide somewhere." (from "Will you find me?")
"Come out come out wherever you are said the fisherman to the sea
I miss you love, where can you be?" (more from "Will you find me?")
While waiting for the new album, we've got one new song - "Another Morning". I've already beaten that to death, which means it's time to dig into the old stuff in anticipation of the new. And that's just fine by me...
"Come on beautiful, we'll go sit on the front lawn
and watch the fireflies as the sun goes down.
They don't live too long, just a flash & then they're gone.
We'll laugh at them & watch the sun go down.
Well you're so pretty baby,
you're the prettiest thing I know.
You're so pretty baby,
where did you go?
Tell me why you don't sleep anymore
tell me what you sit up all night waiting for
are you waiting for loneliness to paralyze?
are you waiting for sister midnight to unleash the tide?
Time to finish the prayer that started as a kiss
The overwhelming dream of happiness
I'll give you all of my good luck
for the overwhelming dream that's killing us
Oh come on, we'll go sit on the front lawn
I'll hold you in my arms & you're gone
where did you go?
Firefly"
